How to enjoy this long hot summer…

3 white pet rabbits with brown spots in the garden

It seems that summer has arrived early this year, and we hope you are all making the most of the gorgeous sunny days!

While we may like to bask in the sun’s rays and spend the day in 20 degrees, your small pets don’t enjoy hot weather so much.

Our team vet, Dr Lucy Robson, has some great advice on ensuring your pets are happy and healthy in the weeks and months ahead.

Dr Lucy commented, “Rabbits and other small furries are unable to sweat and do not pant, putting them at high risk of overheating. Overheating is life threatening if not addressed and therefore, it is crucial that you follow these steps.”

  1. Ensure there is adequate ventilation in the pet room or enclosure

  2. Frequently check the water sources to make sure there is always fresh water present

  3. Use ice cubes in the water sources to keep the temperature low

  4. Fans or other ventilation devices can be used to reduce the circulating air temperature

  5. Provide plenty of areas of shade or hides so the buns do not have to be in direct contact with sunlight

  6. Use damp towels/ cool packs wrapped in towels in the enclosure to provide a cool spot for your pet, taking care to ensure they do not become too wet

  7. Gently mist the enclosure with a water spray bottle

  8. Please do not wet your animals as this can reduce their body temperature too rapidly and be dangerous

  9. Keep stress levels to a minimum to reduce thechance of overheating

  10. Wet fresh vegetables can provide extra cool water

  11. Offer frozen treats/ vegetables in moderation

  12. In case you are worried that your rabbit is overheating, please contact your rabbit-savvy vet, who can instruct you further
